In 2018 the Lotus Flower Trust funded the building of new classrooms and facilities for this remote village school in the foothills of the Himalayas. The Trust was able to fund the construction of five classroom, a staff room, two toilet blocks, a veranda and a set of stairs giving access to the roof and potential further development. The new buildings were opened in November 2019.
Unfortunately, the school has no support from the Education Department of Uttrakhand nor any other Government departments. The school is therefore entirely funded through meagre school fees. On opening there were 106 pupils, but it was anticipated that with the new classrooms an additional 150 children will attend. The school charges the children 300 rupees (£3) a month but 25% of children who live below the poverty line do not pay fees. All the running costs, including the salaries of the 11 teachers, come from the fees. So the school has no money to fund such luxuries such as the items you see below.
School staff have asked us to fund the purchase of a boundary wall, main gate, computers, printers, classroom furniture, cupboards, office furniture, shelving, green boards and CCTV, all totalling £16,250.
